Major US cities are experiencing extreme temperatures caused by a heat dome. A heat dome is a ridge of high-pressure air in the upper atmosphere that stalls and traps hot air while keeping cooler air away, even at night. The process begins when the jet stream, a band of strong winds high in the atmosphere, slows down or buckles.
