Hayli Gubbi volcano in northeastern Ethiopia has erupted for the first time in nearly 12,000 years, sending thick plumes of smoke up to 9 miles into the sky. The Hayli Gubbi, a shield volcano, is the southernmost volcano of the Erta Ale Range in Ethiopia's Afar Region. Hayli Gubbi sits within the geologically active Rift Valley, where tectonic plates converge.
