Locked-in syndrome (LiS) is a rare brain disorder that paralyses most voluntary muscles, except those controlling vertical eye movements. People with LiS are fully conscious and can think clearly, but can't speak, show facial expressions, or move. They usually communicate using eye movements or blinking, often with assistive technology. The condition is caused by damage to the brainstem's pons.
