The island of inversion is a region on nuclear chart where protons and neutrons no longer arrange themselves in levels of increasing energy, the usual shell structure seen in stable elements. It was discovered in neutron-rich elements like chromium-61. In this zone, particles jump into higher shells instead of expected ones, creating unusual nuclear shapes and behaviours defying physics rules.
