Respiratory Depression (hypoventilation) is a breathing disorder and occurs when a person breathes too slowly or shallowly, leading to carbon dioxide building up in the blood (hypercapnia). It can lead to respiratory failure or cardiac arrest. The causes of hypoventilation include misuse, overdose or an unexpected reaction to alcohol, prescription medications or other drugs.
