A COVID-19 variant, XFG or 'Stratus', spreading in the US, is a recombinant strain formed by combining variants F.7 and LP.8.1.2. Scientists suggest its mutations may help it evade the immune system, though it’s not proven to spread faster. First detected in Southeast Asia in January, XFG rose from 0% of US cases in March to about 14% by June.
