The US has reported its first-ever human case of the flesh-eating screwworm parasite, detected in a Maryland resident who recently returned from Guatemala. The parasite, known as the New World screwworm or Cochliomyia hominivorax, is a fly whose larvae burrow into the living flesh of mammals, causing painful and potentially deadly infections.
