Vanishing twin syndrome is a type of miscarriage that occurs during pregnancies involving twins or triplets. It occurs when an embryo detected during an ultrasound can't be found on a future ultrasound. The vanishing twin's tissue gets absorbed by surviving embryo(s) and parent. In most cases where vanishing occurs in first trimester, the remaining foetus isn't affected and develops normally.
