On Dhanteras, people traditionally buy gold, silver, brass utensils and idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha as symbols of prosperity. Buying new clothes and brooms on Dhanteras is also considered auspicious. However, items like sharp objects, glassware, plastic goods, black-coloured items should be avoided as they're believed to bring bad luck. Dhanteras will take place on October 18.
