Speaking on 50 years of Emergency, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, "When a family is considered above the nation, things like Emergency take place." Jaishankar said Emergency was imposed to break the morale of the country. Emergency was the 21-month period between June 1975 and March 1977 during which civil liberties were suspended by the then PM Indira Gandhi.
