Major General Amir Hatami, the new Chief Commander of Iran's Army, served as the Defence Minister of Iran from 2013 to 2021 under former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Hatami, who has a background in Iran's traditional armed forces called the Artesh, succeeds Lieutenant General Sayyid Abdolrahim Mousavi. He has previously served as the head of the army's international relations office.
