Bodhidharma was an Indian monk from Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, who is known as Daruma Daishi in Japan. He is said to have travelled to Japan thousand years ago. Bodhidharma, represented by Daruma dolls, is the founder of Zen Buddhism- known as Chan in China and Zen in Japan. Notably, PM Narendra Modi was presented with Daruma doll in Japan.
