Indian Jesuit priest and astronomer Richard D'Souza has been appointed as the new Director of the Vatican Observatory by Pope Leo XIV. Hailing from Mapusa in Goa, D'Souza earned degrees in physics and astronomy from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai and Germany's Max Planck Institutes, and held a postdoc at the University of Michigan. He's been with the observatory since 2016.
