José Jerí, a 38-year-old conservative lawyer and president of Peru's Congress, became Peru's new President on Friday, after Dina Boluarte's impeachment. Jerí, who vowed to combat crime, will lead transitional government until July 2026 amid high public discontent over corruption. Notably, Jerí was accused of sexual assault by a woman at a 2024 party, but the case was later shelved.
