German conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz, poised to become the country's next Chancellor after his Christian Democratic Union secured maximum votes in elections, was first elected to the European Parliament in 1989. He entered German politics in 1994 but took a decade-long break in 2009 to pursue corporate law. He is also a trained pilot and owns two private aircraft.
