Karla Sofía Gascón on Thursday became the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for Oscars. Born in 1972, the actor appeared in Spanish daily shows in early 2000s, before moving to Mexico in 2009 to work in telenovelas. Karla completed her gender transition in 2018 and released a book under her birth name, Karsia, while announcing her new name.
