After four people were killed during statehood protests in Leh, Sonam Wangchuk's wife Gitanjali J Angmo questioned role of security forces. "Who gave CRPF orders to open fire? Who shoots at their own people," she asked. She rejected claims of Wanchuk instigating any unrest and said, "He had no idea about this, he was somewhere else on a hunger strike."
