EK Janaki Ammal was the first woman botanist in India, best known for her contributions to making sugarcane sweeter. She was also one of the first women scientists to receive the Padma Shri in 1977. Originally from Kerala, she used to teach at a women's college when she received a scholarship from the University of Michigan in US.
