Born at Rey village in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, Pathania came from a lineage steeped in military valour. He was the first Indian to receive a Military Cross in the Second World War, he was also the first Indian commanding officer of the Gorkha Rifles. Until his last days, Pathania urged young Indians to serve in what he called “the world’s best fighting force.”
