Flamingos are pink because their diet of algae, brine shrimp, and crustaceans contains carotenoids. Their liver breaks down this pigment and deposits it in their feathers, making them appear pink. Chicks are born grey or white and turn pink as their diet changes. The intensity of their pink hue depends on diet quality, while regular preening spreads oils enhancing colour.
