Bhagat Singh, along with Sukhdev and Rajguru, asked the British to carry out their execution by shooting instead of being hanged. In a letter to the Governor of Punjab, they asked to be treated like prisoners of war and not criminals, as they were accused of "waging war against the King". The British authorities, however, did not honour their request.
