A 6.3-magnitude earthquake shook Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Monday, but no tsunami warning followed. This is because the principal movement was horizontal, which displaces less water than vertical motion. Tsunamis happen when ocean floor shifts up or down and pushes lots of water. The lack of major damage can be attributed to the earthquake's remote epicentre and sparse population.
