In 1892, William Painter, discovered that a cap with 21 ridges was an ideal seal for beer bottles. He found that more ridges caused the metal to crack, while fewer ridges led to leaks. The 21-ridge cap kept the beer fizzy, airtight, and simple to open. The design was so successful that it became a long-lasting industry standard.
