A cloudburst is defined as 100 mm/hour or more rainfall over 20-30 square km, as per IMD. It occurs only due to orographic lift or occasionally when a warm air parcel mixes with cooler air, resulting in sudden condensation. Rapid condensation caused by moist air being forced to move upwards quickly due to mountainous terrain is called orographic lift.
