A person feels the sensation of their ears popping in airplanes and sometimes in elevators due to the Eustachian tube, according to experts. This feeling is a result of the buildup of pressure inside the middle ear, which causes the Eustachian tube to open suddenly so as to equalise the pressure. Notably, air pressure changes with altitude.
