Leaves appear green in spring and summer because of chlorophyll, pigment that helps trees convert sunlight into energy. In autumn, chlorophyll production slows down as daylight shortens and temperatures drop, fading the green pigment. This exposes carotenoids that create yellow and orange shades and anthocyanins that add reds and purples. A mix of these pigments produces the autumn foliage.
