Spacecraft prefer landing in oceans over landing on the ground as it is generally considered a simpler and safer option. The low viscosity and high density of water provide a cushion. The landing has to be precisely defined on land, unlike water where there is no danger of hitting something, even if the spacecraft drags a bit off-course.
