Why is it hard to break bad habits?

Bad habits are routines and trying to break one creates dissonance, according to experts. Breaking a bad habit causes the brain's limbic system to activate fight-flight-or-freeze responses, which makes a person want to avoid the "threat", as per Harvard Health. Sometimes such habits also get linked to dopamine, which creates "the craving to do it again", a neurobiologist said.
