South Africa has begun injecting rhino horns with harmless radioactive isotopes to curb poaching. Initiated by the University of the Witwatersrand and conservationists, the Rhisotope Project treated five rhinos in its pilot phase. James Larkin said the method, which ensures horns can be detected by nuclear security systems at borders, is completely safe for the animal.
