Iranian authorities have banned people from walking dogs in public in multiple cities for "maintaining public order, ensuring safety and protecting public health", local media reported. While there is no law banning dog ownership, doing so has become a "contentious topic" following the 1979 Islamic revolution, AFP reported. Many religious scholars reportedly consider touching dogs ritually impure.
