The term 'buck moon' originates from native American traditions and references a seasonal natural phenomenon. In July, male deer or bucks start to regrow their antlers after shedding them in spring. In this month, antlers grow as much as a quarter-inch per day. July's full moon is also referred by other names, including Thunder Moon, Hay Moon and Salmon Moon.
