Mahatma Gandhi, the strongest symbol of non-violence in the 20th century, was nominated for Nobel Peace Prize in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 and days before his assassination in 1948, but never received it. A posthumous award was considered in 1948 but was declined over technical reasons. That year, the award was reserved as "there was no suitable living candidate".
