Scientists say the northern lights may grow stronger as the Sun enters the next phase of its 11-year cycle. During this declining period, coronal holes, the dark areas on the Sun that release strong solar winds, become more frequent. These high-speed solar winds thus produced strike Earth's magnetic field, creating long-lasting geomagnetic storms that make auroras brighter and stronger.
