Chennai-based diabetologist Dr V Mohan said controlling blood sugar and blood pressure is crucial. He said prolonged high sugar damages kidney blood vessels and leads to changes in its structure. High blood pressure worsens it, putting double stress on kidneys. People with both diabetes and hypertension are four times more likely to develop heart disease, Johns Hopkins Medicine reported.
