An airline captain Manjeet Singh explained that the white lines behind planes are called "contrails". He said that at high altitudes, temperature is extremely low, while a plane's engine produces very high heat. He added that when the hot gases containing water vapour meet the cold air, they condense immediately, forming tiny ice crystals that create the visible white line.
