PM Narendra Modi said he's standing firmly with farmers. Reportedly, US is pressuring India to open its market to genetically modified (GM) soyabean and corn. While India's average per-hectare corn yield is 3.5 tonnes and that of soyabean is 0.9 tonnes, the respective US yields are 11 and 3.5 tonnes. Indian farmers believe genetically modified items will crash domestic prices.
