Why were 10 days removed from October in 1582?

Ten days were removed from October in 1582 as Gregorian calendar was adopted. This was done to bring the vernal equinox (when Sun is directly above equator) from March 11 back to March 21. The church chose October to avoid skipping any major Christian festivals. In countries that adopted the new calendar, October 4 was directly followed by October 15.
