Democratic nominee for NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani had identified himself as both Asian and African American/Black on his Columbia University application in 2009, NYT reported. He recently said he doesn't identify himself as Black or African American but "an American who was born in Africa". "Most college applications don’t have a box for Indian-Ugandans...so I checked multiple boxes," he said.
