China has built at least 22 villages inside Bhutanese territory since 2016, according to several reports. Of these, eight have reportedly been constructed near disputed Doklam plateau since 2020. Notably, Doklam was the site of 73-day India-China standoff in 2017, when India intervened to stop China from building a road that would've given it access to southern part of plateau.
