A new study in Geophysical Research Letters suggests Mars' dune gullies may form from exploding dry ice blocks, not water. Utrecht University's Dr Lonneke Roelofs recreated the process in lab conditions mimicking Mars' cold, thin atmosphere. When CO₂ ice blocks slid down slopes, they began to dig into the slope like a burrowing mole, carving trenches resembling Mars' gullies.
