Black fungi discovered in Chernobyl's reactor ruins showed a unique ability to thrive in intense radiation. They grow toward radiation, a process called radiotropism. Their high melanin absorbs and protects against radiation. Some fungi may even use radiation for energy, known as radiosynthesis. These traits make them promising for space, where they could help shield astronauts from radiations.
