The newly discovered stick insect species, named Acrophylla alta, has been identified as the heaviest insect in Australia. It was found in the high rainforest canopies of northern Queensland. Weighing up to 44 grams, roughly a golf ball's mass, it inhabits the misty Atherton Tablelands. Researchers suggest its large size helps conserve body heat in the cool, wet canopy climate.
