Scientists discovered Mediterranean harvester ants (Messor ibericus) can generate males of a different species, Messor structor. Queens store sperm and, through a genetic trick, produce hybrid workers as well as pure structor males that still carry ibericus mitochondrial DNA. About 10% of eggs from isolated queens developed this way. This strategy could help the ants boost genetic diversity.
