Young ants release a chemical 'kill me' signal asking worker ants to be killed when they become fatally ill, a study has found. Sealed inside cocoons, pupae cannot isolate themselves, so workers tear open the cocoon and inject poison. This kills the infected pupa and its pathogen, preventing disease spread in the colony, which is highly vulnerable to infections.
