An 81-year-old Japanese woman deliberately committed crimes to secure a place in prison amid Japan's ageing crisis. The woman, who has been jailed twice for theft, first stole food in her 60s and later repeated offence when she had to survive on a meagre pension. Before her imprisonment, Akiyo lived with her son, who often wished for her to leave.
