A new study found that queens of the Iberian harvester ant (Messor ibericus), apart from their own kind, give birth to cloned males of another species entirely (Messor structor), with which they can mate to produce hybrid workers. Mating with Messor ibericus males produces next generation of queen. The two species diverged from each other over five million years ago.
