India's original Constitution is preserved in a nitrogen-filled, airtight display case in Parliament, containing less than 1% oxygen. Written in black ink, which oxidises over time, the manuscripts are protected from sunlight, microbes, and air pollution. Since paper is made of cellulose, exposure to pollutants and acids can break its chains and weaken it, making this preservation essential.
