Wigs became popular over the reign of Charles II in England after an outbreak of syphilis left a large portion of the population bald. People wore wigs, made of horse or human hair, also known as perukes, to hide their lice and symptoms of sexually transmitted infection. By early 1800s, judges and barristers started wearing wigs in courts.
