A severe geomagnetic storm warning has been issued for Friday evening for the first time in 20 years. Geomagnetic storms, caused by coronal mass ejections directed towards Earth, pose significant risks to infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and the surface. The storm is a potential risk to power grids, communication networks and satellite and low-frequency radio navigation systems, including GPS.
