Researchers found that supportive friends strongly boost relationship quality, especially when couples face family or societal disapproval. The study conducted among 757 participants showed that friend approval was the strongest predictor of relationship quality, particularly for couples from minority cultural backgrounds. Family approval mattered mainly for couples from collectivistic cultures.
